Giger's biomechanical design was the most specific of any science fiction horror creature — no discernible eyes, no recognizable expression of emotion, just anatomy optimized for predation. Alien was the slasher in space, with the crucial addition that the creature was not driven by psychology but by a biological cycle. Sigourney Weaver as Ripley was the survivor that the series made the most specific archetype of a horror protagonist of the 80s.
